Hair Care for Raw Hair

Updated: Apr 3

So you've purchased, or you're thinking of purchasing raw hair? Well, let's get into how to really care for your investment.

You're thinking about getting raw hair haven't you? Or you've watched countless posts and finally have been influenced to make that purchase and you're super excited to install the hair. Well girl, congrats! Now let's get into the nitty gritty. After all, you didn't make such a pricy purchase to not get your money's worth.

Raw hair is vastly different from virgin, processed and synthetic hair. Because raw hair is donor hair, meaning it was taken from a human donor, that means it's 10000% human hair, which means you've got to take care of it as you would take care of your own hair. Here are some quick steps that will help you maintain your hair, so that you can get the maximum longevity of its lifespan.

WASHING RAW HAIR

First thing's first, you must wash your raw hair when you've received it. However, at SKY Luxury Studio we pride ourselves on providing you with a luxurious experience, so we've already done this step for you.

However, once you've had the hair installed, due to your daily activities, be it going to work, to the gym or just getting some errands done, the natural oils, as well as any products applied, have now started to accumulate on the extensions, making it slightly limp, just as it would happen with your real hair. As such, it is recommended that you wash your hair extensions every 1-2 weeks. We recommend that you use natural shampoo and conditioner to avoid the slow damage from sulfates, silicones, SLE, SLS that are found in most hair care products today. After washing, be sure to air-dry your hair, as to limit the amount of heat that may affect its lifespan.

Our shampoo and conditioner recommendations for:

Straight and Wavy hair:

CHI Infra Shampoo, CHI Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner or L'Oreal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo and Conditioner

Curly Hair:

L'Oreal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Moisture Seal Shampoo and Conditioner

DEEP CONDITIONING RAW HAIR After washing your hair, we strongly advise that you deep condition it every 2 weeks.

Because the hair has been taken from its donor it will consequently begin to lack its usual natural nutrients. As such, nutrients must now be regularly reintroduced into the hair to maintain its luster, strength and lifespan.

Our Hair Mask recommendation:

Hi-Pro-Pac Keratin Protein Treatment

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER

We highly recommend using a leave-in conditioner or serum. Why, you may ask? Leave-in products provide extra moisture to the hair, protect it from damage, and help detangle the strands. Mostly all hair types, whether straight or curly, natural or color-treated, will definitely benefit from the use of leave-in conditioners or serums, however, you may find them particularly useful if you have dry, damaged, or frizzy hair. They may also be helpful if you use heat-styling tools like curling or straightening irons.

Our leave-in conditioner and serum recommendations for:

Straight and Wavy hair:

CHI Infra Silk Infusion, CHI Keratin Leave-in or Olaplex No.6

Curly hair:

Aussie Miracle Curls Leave-in Detangling Milk

HEAT APPLICATION

Although raw hair can withstand a lot more heat than virgin, processed and synthetic hair, it surely does not mean that you should abuse the benefit. Remember to be gentle when applying heat to your hair. A major benefit of raw hair is its ability to retain styling for a vast amount of weeks, meaning if you straighten it, it stays straight and if you add curls, they can last up to 4 weeks. Avoiding intense heat increases the lifespan of your hair, so it is imperative that you use a good heat protectant and styling tools. However, a really good product to avoid heat altogether would be the use of satin heatless rollers/curlers. This allows you achieve perfect curls with no heat damage, and the silk will also help your hair stay silky smooth and frizz-free.

Our heat application and protectant recommendations:

Heatless Curlers: SKY Luxury 100% Silk Heatless Roller-Curler Set

Flat Irons: BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Ultra-Thin Straightening Iron or BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron

Heat Protectants: Matrix Mega Sleek Iron Smoother, IC Fantasia Heat Protectant or Olaplex No. 7

COMBING AND NIGHT-TIME ROUTINE

The ideal way to comb or brush your raw hair to avoid matting and tangling is to comb from the tips (bottom) to the roots. Under no circumstance should you try to comb your hair from the roots. Get yourself a wide-tooth comb and a good paddle brush for your raw hair extension.

How you care for your hair at night determines how much matting or tangling you will get. If you are not wearing a silk scarf/bonnet over your hair, we recommend you use a silk pillowcase. Both of these allow your hair to glide smoothly whilst you’re asleep.

Finally, once you've removed your raw extensions, be sure that you store it in a silk or satin bag, as this ensures that it does not tangle or becomes dried out.

Now that we've given you some in-depth knowledge about caring for your raw hair, we hope that you find these tips helpful. If you're not already a SKY Doll, we hope you become one soon!
